"In putting together this comprehensive review covering the 2009 Mazda RX-8 sportscar, the experts at TheCarConnection.com turned to a wide range of critical review voices. TheCarConnection.com's editors also included their firsthand experience driving the new, high-performance R3 variant.

The Mazda RX-8 is a compact sportscar with a unique engine configuration and an unusual passenger layout. The RX-8 is powered by a Wankel rotary engine and follows a long line of Mazda models (including the respected RX-7) powered by rotary engines. Furthermore, even though it has a very coupelike profile, the RX-8 has seating for four along with two small backdoors that are hinged at the back.

For 2009, the RX-8 gets some minor alterations to improve performance and ride quality, several new features, and subtle styling changes inside and out; furthermore, a new high-end R3 model joins the lineup, adding a track-ready appearance and more performance goodies.

Even five years after its introduction, the Mazda RX-8 still has an exterior design that turns heads. The low-slung coupe has a rather long, low hoodline and lipped wheel wells that help accentuate sporty wheel designs and low-profile performance tires. Especially notable is the RX-8's rakish side profile, with rear glass that continues the same smooth arc of the roofline to meet the rear decklid. For 2009, there are a number of minor changes on the outside, including turn signal lamps that have been integrated into larger headlamps units, a redesigned front fascia and grille, and a slightly different tail lamp design.

The interior has a unified low-slung, cockpit-centric appearance, with a matte-metallic-trimmed center console that runs from the instrument panel all the way back. The instrument panel flows smoothly. Generously bolstered front seats provide plenty of comfort and support, along with enough space for taller adults, but the two rear bucket seats are only for kids. The 2009 RX-8 Mazda also gets freshened a bit inside, with a new steering wheel design, a more smoothly contoured instrument panel, and improved materials.

Most noteworthy are the backdoors; they're shorter and hinged at the back, and opened together with the front doors allow impressive access. However, entry and exit for backseat occupants is still difficult; adults need to contort a bit to get into position, and they must especially watch their heads, as the low roofline curves downward at the back. While the seating position in the 2009 Mazda RX-8 is rather low, there's plenty of headroom to afford an upright driving position, so outward visibility isn't an issue, as it is in some other sportscars.

The 2009 Mazda RX-8 is powered by a compact but potent 1.3-liter, twin-rotor engine, making 232 horsepower with the standard six-speed manual transmission but detuned to 212 horsepower with the available six-speed Sport A/T automatic transmission.

The automatic transmission available in the 2009 Mazda RX-8 includes steering-wheel paddle-shifters, but the standard six-speed manual gearbox is the best choice of the two. The stick has very short throws and snicks neatly into each gear, with a light and progressive clutch. It's also the way to get the most enjoyment out of the rotary engine, which needs to rev high to take advantage of the power on tap and the great steering and maneuverability.

The engine has a throaty and mild-mannered sound in leisurely driving, but at full wail, it develops the urgent tone of a speed bike. Fortunately, if you tire of the sounds, you can simply shift up to sixth gear and cruise in relative quiet. One downside, no matter which transmission, is fuel economy; with an EPA city fuel economy rating of 16 mpg, the 2009 Mazda RX-8 is far from frugal.

Outside of the novel personality of the rotary engine and the odd backseat arrangement, the very low center of mass and go-kart-like feel on the road are the main selling points for the 2009 Mazda RX-8. You're low and close to the road and don't need to double speed limits to have fun. The front tires keep a tenacious grip, the body rarely leans, and the quick ratio and the electric-boost steering unwind nicely and bring good feedback. The ride can be a bit jittery on uneven surfaces, but in all, it's a very fun, precise car to drive.

The 2009 Mazda RX-8 is offered in four different models: Sport, Touring, Grand Touring, and R3. Even base Sport models come with power accessories, air conditioning, keyless entry, and attractive alloy wheels, but Grand Touring models pile on extras like HID headlamps, fog lamps, rain-sensing wipers, automatic climate control, upgraded sound systems, a Bluetooth interface, and a keyless start system.

The high-performance 2009 Mazda RX-8 R3 gets a sport-tuned suspension, Bilstein shocks, and high-performance tires on 19-inch wheels, along with foam-filled front-suspension crossmembers, which help quiet the stiffer ride and aid control. It also comes with wider side sills, forged alloy wheels finished in a smoky gray hue, a 300-watt Bose Centerpoint sound system, and a Bluetooth interface.

The insurance-based IIHS has not crash-tested the 2009 Mazda RX-8, but NHTSA rates the RX-8's frontal protection with four and five stars, and gives it four stars for side-impact protection. Both side airbags and head-protecting side-curtain bags covering the driver and front passenger positions are standard, but neither of the side airbags covers rear-occupant positions. Electronic stability control comes standard in Touring, Grand Touring, and R3 models, but it's not available on the base Sport--a model that should be avoided by those who drive on wintry roads. One advantage of the RX-8's very low center of mass and wide stance is its very slight chance of rollover; it's one of the few vehicles to get the top five-star rollover rating from the federal government."

Overview

The Mazda 3 is space-efficient and exciting to drive, practical and economical, and it's available with a surprising list of comfort and luxury features.

The Mazda 3, or Mazda3, was developed on three continents, by Mazda, Volvo, and Ford, and Mazda did all the final tuning at its test track in Japan.

This is a premium automobile, exciting to drive, styled adventurously, and fully equipped with luxury features. There's nothing austere, basic or cheap about it. The seats are supportive and comfortable, good for long drives.

Sedan and hatchback versions look quite different. The sedan has the traditional appearance of a four-door, five-passenger car. The five-door hatchback is like the high-fashion station wagons from European manufacturers, offering the practicality of the five-door configuration with an emphasis on a premium driving experience. The Mazda3 is a good choice for drivers who have friends or lots of stuff: The sedan and hatchback excel at back-seat roominess when compared with the Honda Civic and other competition, and the hatchback excels at cargo space.

There's a high-performance version called Mazdaspeed3, motivated by 263 turbocharged horsepower.

The Mazda3 was launched as a 2004 model, then extensively updated and upgraded for 2007, with a revised appearance inside and out. The 2009 (and mid-2008) models get feature upgrades. The interiors are freshened, with piano black rather than woodgrain trim (with increasing amounts of it on higher-line models). Grand Touring models got a standard eight-way power driver's seat. The Mazda 3i Touring comes with 17-inch alloy wheels, foglights, a leather-wrapped steering wheel and shift knob, a CD player, and a color-keyed grille.

An all-new Mazda 3 is expected for the 2010 model year.

All 2009 Mazda 3 models come standard with ABS, Electronic Brake-force Distribution (EBD), Brake Assist, side-impact airbags, and side air curtains.

All Mazdas come with a roadside assistance program, which operates 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, throughout the United States and Canada.

Expert Reviews

Published on November 4, 2008
"TheCarConnection.com's editors read the latest reviews on the new 2009 Mazda CX-9 to write this comprehensive review. Experts from TheCarConnection.com also drove the Mazda CX-9 to offer you a definitive opinion on this sporty, seven-passenger crossover. This review also compares the 2009 Mazda CX-9 with other vehicles in its class to give you the best advice even when other reviews present conflicting opinions.

The seven-passenger CX-9 crossover was introduced in 2007 and is closely related to the Ford Edge and Lincoln MKX. Crossover vehicles like the 2009 Mazda CX-9 are generally car-based vehicles that look and perform somewhat like SUVs. The CX-9 combines the space of a wagon with the ride height and utility of an SUV in a style that eschews the expected boxiness of both and delivers the sporty looks of Mazda's zoom-zoom heritage. The look is a bit more aggressive and overt than that of most other roomy crossover utes.

Simultaneously, the 2009 CX-9's styling avoids going in the false, "off-road-tough" direction of many SUVs. Unlike many high-horsepower V-6 engines out there, the 3.7-liter unit in the CX-9 does not require premium fuel, yet produces 273 horsepower. A smooth, six-speed automatic is standard and maximum towing capacity is 3,500 pounds. The CX-9 has crisp, responsive handling for a vehicle of its size and weight, though it's not as nimble as Mazda's smaller CX-7. With an EPA city fuel economy estimate of 17 mpg city, fuel economy isn't a strong point for the powertrain, though.

Though the 2009 Mazda CX-9 is not the biggest of the big crossovers, the front seats are comfortable, and three rows of seating make the 2009 Mazda CX-9 quite useful for soccer-mom duty. The second row is split 60/40, reclines, or folds flat for cargo duty. Overall, good ride comfort, pleasing interior materials, and impressive build quality give the CX-9 a feel that's quite upscale.

With top crash tests all around, along with all of the expected airbags, and active and passive safety features, the CX-9 ranks as one of the safest vehicles in its class and makes an ideal family conveyance for that reason.

Even in base model form--where it's the best bargain, in TheCarConnection.com's opinion--the 2009 Mazda CX-9 comes equipped as a luxury vehicle, with tri-zone climate control and a Bluetooth hands-free interface among the standard features that are sometimes optional in this class of vehicle. But in more expensive, leather-lined Touring and Grand Touring trims some of the top options such as surround-sound audio and the rear DVD entertainment system can drive the price toward $40,000--and the realm of true luxury marques."

"As the automotive experts at TheCarConnection.com put together this all-encompassing review of the Mazda CX-7, they included a host of different review sources and brought you the best information. The experienced editors at TheCarConnection.com have driven the Mazda CX-7 and imparted their driving insights in this review.

The mid-size Mazda CX-7 was completely new for 2007, one of a growing segment of performance-flavored utility vehicles. The 2009 Mazda CX-7 stands out from the crowd of carlike crossover SUVs with its steeply raked (66-degree incline) windshield; its curvaceous, aggressively styled exterior; and a sport-tuned drivetrain and suspension.

Powering the 2009 Mazda CX-7 is a standard 2.3-liter, turbocharged...read more four-cylinder direct-injection (DISI) engine developing 244 horsepower, driving through the front wheels or a full-time all-wheel-drive system. It is very similar to the engine used in the now-defunct MazdaSpeed6 sport sedan, and it's intended to provide a similar high-performance driving experience in a vehicle with greater versatility. For 2009, the CX-7 requires the use of premium fuel.

The CX-7's engine doesn't feel refined when you're taking advantage of all its power, and it's not as fuel-efficient as rival vehicles. While the six-speed automatic transmission is standard, it does allow easy manual control of the gears--helpful when driving enthusiastically or on mountain roads. In Drive, we find the transmission to be nicely responsive; however, upshifts can be somewhat harsh. Crisp handling and impressive grip help take advantage of the turbocharged engine's power, and the 2009 Mazda CX-7 corners quite flat, considering its nearly two-ton weight and tall stance. Ride quality is mostly smooth, but larger bumps can be jarring, and coarse road surfaces make the interior uncommonly noisy. Steering feel is nice and tight, and the 2009 CX-7 changes direction quickly and securely.

Inside, the sportscar theme continues; the CX-7's interior is styled more like the cockpit of a sports coupe than an SUV, except for the vast dashboard required by the steeply raked windshield. Front-row accommodation in the 2009 Mazda CX-7 is good; the seats allow plenty of space and hold you in place. The story is not so good farther back; there's no third row, and the second row is smaller than most would expect from a mid-size ute--especially in legroom--and there's barely space to fit three across. Folding the backseats down allows 70 inches of flat floor space for cargo, although it's not particularly roomy or convenient given the sloping roofline, rakish hatch, and tall loading height. The cargo floor can, however, be flipped over to a washable surface for carrying dirty items. Mazda could learn a thing or two in packaging from its Asian rivals as there are few storage spaces for small items.

Consider the 2009 Mazda CX-7 a jacked-up hatchback with a lot of extra utility, and you'll understand its role. The CX-7 has an oversize center console storage area that can take a laptop computer. The wide console area may interfere with knee room for some taller drivers, though. Overall, ergonomics are quite good.

Three trim levels are available on the 2009 Mazda CX-7: Sport, Touring, and Grand Touring. Air conditioning, power windows and locks, remote keyless entry, and cruise control are standard across the line. CX-7 Sports lose their standard power driver's seat this year. Topline Grand Touring models include xenon headlights, heated exterior mirrors, an upgraded gauge cluster, automatic headlights, automatic climate control, and distinct leather upholstery. The options list is extensive, including a touch-screen DVD-based navigation system, a premium Centerpoint surround-sound audio system, remote engine start, a moonroof, and Sirius Satellite Radio. No Bluetooth hands-free interface is available, though, which is a disadvantage, considering more states are mandating hands-free devices for cell phones while driving.

Five-star ratings in frontal and side impact protection from the federal government, along with top "good" ratings from the IIHS in frontal and side impact tests demonstrate Mazda's attention to safety. Safety equipment on the 2009 Mazda CX-7 includes front side airbags, side curtain bags, anti-lock brakes, and stability control--all par for the course in the CX-7's class of vehicles. A well-designed structure, along with these features, brings impressive crash-test results, though a "marginal" rating in the seat-based rear-impact test keeps it from getting top marks across the board."

"In assembling this review on the 2009 Mazda Mazda5, TheCarConnection.com's automotive experts read a number of critical reviews and included the most useful information from them. Then the editors at TheCarConnection.com brought their firsthand experience with the Mazda5 to this review to make it especially insightful.

Take a wagon, raise the roof, and add sliding rear doors (or just make a typical U.S. minivan at seven-eighths scale), and that's the 2009 Mazda Mazda5--a vehicle not closely rivaled in the U.S. market. Slightly smaller than short-wheelbase versions of minivans, such as the Kia Sedona, it's a three-row, six-seat "sport minivan."

As it's based on the compact Mazda3 hatchback/sedan, nimble handling...read more and excellent maneuverability distinguish the 2009 Mazda5 from other SUV and minivan possibilities on the road. That handling prowess is assured via MacPherson struts in the front and a multilink suspension in the rear, with 17-inch wheels and tires. Braking is provided by a surefooted four-wheel anti-lock disc system. The Mazda5 rides well, too--smoothly but firmly and without much body motion. But it's hindered by a 153-horsepower, 2.4-liter four-cylinder engine that is only somewhat peppy with the standard (on Sport trims) five-speed manual (a rarity among minivans). With the available (standard on Touring and Grand touring trims) five-speed automatic transmission, the engine is barely adequate with a light load and completely overwhelmed when carrying around half of your kid's soccer team. Urban dwellers will be more suited to the Mazda5 than suburban exiles.

The 2009 Mazda Mazda5 impresses us by its surprisingly spacious interior, with seating for up to six people--although the rearmost two seats are kid's stuff only. Theater-style seating makes the most of those rear seats, although the front seats are skimpy in size for taller or larger people. A one-touch walk-in mechanism offers easy access to the third-row seats, and both the second- and third-row seats can fold down to create a virtually flat floor for transporting large objects. For more space in either the second or third row as needed, the second-row seats slide fore and aft. The rear liftgate has two detents for drivers of different heights, though if you're over six feet tall, you'll have to duck.

While not as big and heavy as most family minivans or SUVs, the 2009 Mazda5 scores high marks in NHTSA impact protection tests, though it lacks an important feature, electronic stability control. Driver, front passenger, and side front impact protection scores the highest--five stars; and rear side impact protection and rollover resistance score four stars. Four-wheel anti-lock disc brakes with electronic brake-force distribution are paired in the standard-features list, which also includes front side and side curtain airbags that cover all three rows of seating. But life-saving electronic stability control--now standard on virtually all minivans and people-haulers its size--is nowhere to be found on the features list.

In Sport or Touring trim levels, the 2009 Mazda Mazda5 includes a standard CD stereo, power windows and locks, and cruise control. Available equipment includes air conditioning, fog lamps, a CD changer, and a power moonroof. For 2009, the Mazda5 gets a new exterior color (Liquid Silver), and the "Sand" interior theme is available with the black and dark blue exterior colors. Grand Touring models also pick up standard alarm systems, a Bluetooth hands-free phone system, automatic headlights, heated sideview mirrors, and rain-sensing wipers.

Top options on the 2009 Mazda5 include a DVD-based navigation system, remote engine start, an overhead rear-seat DVD entertainment system, and Sirius Satellite Radio."
